The first major US patent for the hair loss drug finasteride was filed last year. Now the US Food and Drug Administration is warning patients about the potential impact of finasteride on its ability to treat and prevent hair loss.
The new drug, which is the first drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of male pattern hair loss, will be launched early next year. It is the first drug specifically approved by FDA to treat this type of hair loss and is expected to become the first drug approved for the treatment of enlarged prostates, a condition that affects approximately 5-10% of men by the age of 50.
Finasteride works by reducing the amount of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the scalp, which can contribute to hair loss in men. DHT is a hormone that can shrink the hair follicles in men. DHT affects hair follicles, so lowering DHT levels will reduce the growth of these follicles.
The new drug will be available only by prescription in the US and has not yet been officially approved for hair loss treatment.

Finasteride has been prescribed in the United States for over a decade and has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of male pattern hair loss.
According to Dr. Johnson, the drug was developed for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and has been found to reduce the size of the prostate, as well as the growth of hair in men with this condition. Finasteride is also used to treat male pattern hair loss caused by an enlarged prostate.
“We have received numerous reports of side effects of the drug, including decreased libido and erectile dysfunction,” said Dr. Johnson. “We will continue to evaluate this treatment and provide the patient information and treatment plan with each patient.”
Johnson said that the new drug will be available only through prescription in the US, and there is no FDA-approved generic version. Finasteride is one of several new drugs that are being studied and approved by the FDA, with the approval being given in 2023.
